Your online dating photo is quite possibly the most powerful tool you have in creating an effective profile. It’s the first thing that hooks a potential date’s attention. It makes a person decide to read your profile and eventually discover what a great personality you have. It also shows that you are serious about finding someone online.
Here are a few tips on having the ideal online dating photo:
Use a recent picture
Recent photograph means a photo taken within the last few months. That photo of you sunbathing in Thailand five years ago might look sexy and flattering but it’s probably no longer accurate. If you feel that your more recent photos are not suitable or if they are not good enough for you, take this opportunity to grab a camera (and possibly a photographer friend) and start snapping away.
Make sure there no distractions
When you have your picture taken, make sure that no distracting elements appear on the photo. Extra body parts like arms and legs belonging to other people will detract from the focus of the picture, you. Please don’t crop pictures taken with other people. A cropped arm of another person next to you on your pic might cause the viewer to wonder who it belongs to. It can be very distracting and sometimes even confusing.
Don’t hide your face
Don’t hide behind a curtain of hair, or dark, tinted glasses. Your face should be the focus of your portrait. Nothing must detract from it. That being said, attempt to set the focus of the photo on the eyes. Nothing draws people in quite like a pair of beautiful, mysterious eyes. You may post additional photos showing your full body but make sure to have at least one good portrait.
Smile and the world smile back at you
A smile can be very welcoming and will let the person on the other side of the computer screen know that you are a warm and open person. Don’t force the smile. It should be naturally engaging; otherwise the other person might think that you are either stiff or fake.
While there is nothing wrong with being presentable in your picture (this is actually highly recommended), try not to go overboard by hiring a make-up artist and posting a glamour shot. You want the other person to see what you normally look like. It might be a bit of a letdown when you finally meet and your date discovers that you don’t look like a model at all.
Take advantage of diffused lighting
The best time to take your photo is either the morning or the afternoon. The light outdoors is softer and will not form harsh shadows when you take a picture. This can also be very flattering on your complexion.
Avoid showing off skin excessively
You want to attract people but you want to present yourself properly as well. A picture showing off too much skin may invite the wrong kind of attention from people you may not like. The picture you post should not be something you would be ashamed to show your friends and relatives. After all, you are showing it to complete strangers on the Internet.
No “mobile phone in a toilet” photos.
This is a very common type of picture and is really not very flattering at all. If you are serious about finding a date online, invest time in taking a good picture of yourself. A picture taken in the bathroom, in front of the mirror, with your mobile phone can look very immature and unattractive.
